Aug 01, 2023Meralco and STMI launch 115 kV Substation in Laguna
The Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) and Europe-based STMicroelectronics Inc. have recently launched its 115 kilovolt (kV) Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation located at Light Industry and Science Park 2 (LISP 2) in Calamba City, Laguna.
With the new substation, STMicroelectronics Inc. (STMI) will be able to enhance its electric service from 34.5 kV to 115 kV, thereby accommodating the rising demand, which is anticipated to reach 20 megawatts (MW) by 2027, reflecting a growth from 14 MW in the previous year.
The establishment comprises a single 115 kV High-Voltage Gas-Insulated Switchgear, two (2) 30 MVA Power Transformers, one (1) 4.16 kV Medium-Voltage Switchgear, two (2) 750 kVAr capacitor banks, and multiple protective devices.
In addition to the new substation, Meralco has also commissioned the new La Mesa 115 kV Switching Station at LISP 2, which aims to enhance system reliability and power quality in the area.
"These projects are expected to address not only the limited power supply of ST Calamba, which is one of our highest operational risks, but also our future power supply demand, our power quality, our carbon neutrality strategy, and will definitely improve our site power resilience," STMI Vice President and General Manager Yong Suk Kwon stated.
Meralco First Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Ferdinand O. Geluz encouraged companies to collaborate closely with the power distributor for their energy requirements,
"This new STMI Substation along with our new La Mesa Switching Station is designed to support the growing power requirements of STMI's Philippine office through the delivery of safe, adequate, reliable, and high-quality electricity service which is consistent with our commitment to our more than 7.6 million customers," MERALCO senior vice president and head of networks Ronnie Aperocho said.
