Elsewedy Electric on localisation of electric equipment manufacture

Nov 11, 2023Nov 11, 2023

Established in 1938 as a family business trading in electrical equipment, by the 1960s Elsewedy Electric had grown into a pioneer in the business of import and distribution of foreign-made cables in Egypt.

The year 1984 was a landmark year for the company, though, as it introduced the first cable production facility in-country under the name Arab Cables.

Engineer Mohamed Atef, Elsewedy Electric: Africa Chief Commercial Officer, said the company then expanded its production facilities to incorporate power cables, transformers, PVC compounds, fibreglass poles, wires, copper rods and different accessories for cables. Elsewedy Electric also expanded its geographic presence by building new facilities in several countries, such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Algeria, Sudan, Zambia and many more.

A longstanding supporter of Enlit Africa over the years, Elsewedy Electric is an official expert partner to the Utility CEO Forum taking place at the conference.

Elsewedy Electric will show off its diversified portfolio on the Enlit Africa exhibition floor – its acquisition of ISKRAEMECO (winner of the Best Stand Award at Enlit Africa 2022) in 2008 included energy management solutions into its services and acquiring turnkey contractor Rowad Modern Engineering brought an entire construction arm to Elsewedy Electric Group.

Enlit Africa invites you to join the conversation on 28-30 May 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa.

The family-owned company takes corporate social responsibility seriously, and in 2011 they initiated the Elsewedy Technical Academy to ensure the development of qualified resources that will play an important role in localised production of electric equipment.

Elsewedy Electric has also initiated several industrial parks through affiliate Elsewedy Industrial Properties and expanded into Tanzania, East Africa. Today they cover a total of 25 million m2 of land, as well as 14,000 m2 of logistics parks.

Atef says the company places great importance on the solar and hydro energy projects they have worked on in Africa and the Middle East: "In this era of renewable energy, Elsewedy is playing an important role out of responsibility for the environment, to reduce our carbon footprint."

"Elsewedy Electric has developed an estimated annual 290GWh of electricity that will power over 140,000 households while saving over 120,000 tons of CO2."

The company has also joined forces with Electricité de France (EDF) to develop, finance, build and operate two solar PV power plants in Benban and Kom Ombo, Aswan Province. With a colossal 130MWp (thanks to two 65MW plants), Benban is a flagship project for the Egyptian government's Renewable Energies Feed-in Tariff programme.
