Electric vehicles are gaining popularity in India and Tata Motors is one of the leading electric vehicle manufacturer in the country. Nexon EV, which was the first electric vehicle from Tata is currently the best-selling SUV in its segment. After the Nexon EV, Tata launched a much more affordable electric vehicle- Tigor EV in the market. Just like Nexon EV, Tigor EV has also become popular among buyers in EV community. Although charging infrastructure for EVs is improving, we still have a many owners that face range anxiety and also face issues with charging points in many remote locations. In order to solve this problem, here we have a video, where a Tigor EV owner shows how to charge your car using a petrol generator.
The video has been uploaded by sinto antony on his YouTube channel. Video shows the vlogger and his friend who are on a road trip in their Tigor EV. They had planned for a small trip to Wagamon which is a hill station in Kerala. They started the journey in the Tigor EV and after completing 90 km, they stopped to recharge the car at a charging station. After charging the car to 84 percent, they resumed their journey. In the second phase, they had to drive uphill and this meant the battery percentage was dropping down faster than before.

By the time, they reached their destination, the car had almost 26 percent of charge left in it. In Wagamon, there are no proper EV charging stations which is a problem. Vlogger mentions that he drove the car to this location specifically because he wanted to do an experiment. He has been planning for this experiment for a very long time. The vlogger wanted to check if they can actually charge an electric car using a petrol generator. It is not clear whether the vlogger brought this generator or was it arranged from the location where they were staying.
One of the main issues many face while plugging in an electric car to a generator is the earthing. They were using a 3Kw gasoline generator to recharge batteries in the EV. They use a metal rod and fix it to the ground. Then a piece of wire from the switchboard which is connecting the neutral and earth is connected to the metal rod. Once the wires were connected properly, they plug the three pins of the home charger of Nexon EV to the switchboard. The generator is then started and after that, they turn the switch on. The charger of the Tigor EV then shows that there is no error in the charging setup and was properly charging the car. If the earth wire is not properly connected, then it would show error when the charger is connected.
Vlogger then shows the instrument cluster on Tigor EV. The car batteries were charging properly. The car was put on charge with 26 battery left. After charging the car for almost an hour using the generator, the battery charge was around 36 percent. The rate at which the batteries were charging was pretty slow however, it was getting the job done. If you are staying at a hotel, you can ask the hotel staff and plug in the car using the portable charger available with the car.
